Preparing for the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) can be stressful — but knowing the small details can make a big difference on test day. Based on an exclusive interview with a former Chief Test Administrator, here are some lesser-known but important tips that every test taker should know before sitting the UCAT.
1. You Can Rebook Your UCAT Exam for Free — Up to 24 Hours Before
Did you know that you can change your UCAT test date, time, or test centre completely free of charge up to 24 hours before your scheduled exam?
- Changes are subject to availability at your chosen test centre.
- You can reschedule directly through your UCAT account.
Emergency situations? Call the UCAT or Pearson VUE call centre. If they find your reason valid, they might help you reschedule — though a refund is not always guaranteed.
2. If Something Distracts You During the Exam — Report It Immediately
Whether it’s:
- Technical issues (e.g., slow computer or malfunctioning on screen calculator),
- Excessive noise from other test takers,
- Feeling unwell during the test,
Inform the test administrator right away. You may choose not to continue your test, and the administrator will file a report with Pearson VUE. Be sure to get the case number before leaving the test centre.
❗Important: Complaints made after the exam will not guarantee a free resit or retake.
3. Stationery Matters — What You Can Request at the Test Centre
You’ll typically receive:
- A laminated noteboard (usually 8 pages, double-sided),
- A special marker pen for writing.
✅ You can request additional noteboards — up to 2 or more — depending on availability.
✅ Ask for a spare pen before the exam begins. The pens dry quickly, so check before you start.
Pro Tip: Don’t waste time erasing. Just flip the page and continue writing on a fresh side.
4. Bring or Request Earplugs or Noise-Cancelling Headphones
Test centres may provide earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones on request, but not all do. You may bring your own, but always ask the invigilator for permission before using personal items.
5. Breaks Are Allowed — But Time Won’t Stop
Yes, breaks are allowed during the UCAT exam — but the clock keeps ticking.
- You may request to use the restroom or drink water.
- However, taking a break will reduce your available test time, so it’s best to avoid unless necessary.
6. Important Deadline: 19th September
All changes, including rescheduling or test centre modifications, must be made before the UCAT deadline of 19th September. After this date, no changes will be allowed.
This information is based on an exclusive conversation with a former Chief Test Administrator. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, please visit the official UCAT website or contact the Pearson VUE support team directly.
